BRS

So Xxyyy has moved on to creating real, meaningful art? It's like the old saying, "beside every great conceptual time-traveling artist stands a guy with a scarf around his face."

Xxxyyy always wanted to create art with a meaning.

It's just that previously, that meaning was "All art is meaningless".

She's actually pointing at the deep-time bomb. Destruction of the Universe, part 1, an Xxxyyy original.

It's like the Fuseli piece. Only grandioser.

Hmm.

The patterned jumpsuit . . . the big poofy hair . . ..

The Chronomantic looks an awful lot like Checkerboard Nightmare with a scarf.

Fun fact: the hair for the Chronomantic was a combination of the back of Chex's hair and the front of Lyle's hair.

Now that I think about it, the Chronomantic's Modus Operandi seems like what Chex might do with a time suit...

Damnit, Straub! Can't we have a webcomic where you don't end up destroying the universe? ;)

I have to say I'm suffering from another wave of not-getting-this-at-all.

Didn't we move to a parallel universe where all Starslip drives were decommissioned and therefore Deep Time had no reason to plant a bomb? Or does "shift drive technology" refer to "superlinear drive" too? Or are we back in the original universe since the beginning of the children's book storyline?

I believe we're flashing back, in both children's book and this-week form, to the "original" universe just before the deep time bomb went off.

Where "original" means "the one the crew was in just before the deep time bomb went off".

I am not sure if this is truly "meaningful" art, as it is a post-skip universe an applying the "who cares" principle. Much like contextualizing The Last Supper with the substitution of mafia figures it is more a medium by which a point of view is illustrated.

But, Xxxyyy could surprise us.

Chex would probably use it to go back in time and make out with himself. Or check out his rockin' ass without the use of a mirror.

And wait, shift drive? So this is the Starshift universe? I thought the Fuselli exploded in that one before the Jinxlets were born.

The universe-switching transportation is called Shift Drive now, to distinguish from the Superlinear drive, which is still called Slip.

Oh, true.

...

This is a universe where they call it shift and that didn't happen.

Edit: no, remember Xxxyyy's been time traveling. It could be that... overall... you get the idea.

Well I don't think Kris screwed up, if thats what you're getting at. I'm sure theres some explanation for the use of shift instead of slip. Just wondering if I'm reading too much into things here.

They're doing it on purpose for the sake of the audience. I don't want to keep going "starslip drive -- I mean the old one, the one that damaged things, not superlinear-renamed-starslip drive." For clarity's sake, "shift drive" refers to the universe-swapping drive.

If you feel this is incongruous, just remember we're just reading translated Lowspeak.

Perhaps this storyline should be called, "How the Jinxlets saved the Space Zoo, or How I learned to stop worrying and love the Time-Bomb."

I believe the question of what Chex would do with a time machine has already been addressed.

It's not that I'm confused about (now that I understand what they mean by shift drive). It's "Since your era refused to stop using shift drive technology" - they did stop using shift drive technology, in the universe they're now in. Unless you mean Deep Time planted the bomb across all universes at once at that era in time (which would be hard in universes lacking a Jupiter).

Or... looking at the newest strip, it appears we're back in universe number one (well, two if you count the earlier reboot with the website name change).

Yeah, we're in the Crisis universe again. As far as we knew, all the Jinxlets and the zoo died when the Jupiter bomb went off. This is not a second Jupiter bomb in the Starcon universe.

No, it is not.

This issue is why I use the starskip term in the forums.
