The flesh -- which is weak | April 27, 2005 23:38:22 PM
I've been looking at laptops. I don't know why. I think... partly because it couples my desire to keep working on my projects with my growing desire to leave the house.

I have an older PowerBook whose broken adapter jack demands the replacement of the whole board. I can get a cheap laptop for the same amount of money. A cheap PC anyway.

The problem then becomes "what happens to the PC?" Laptop PCs seem to collapse after a year. Macs just last longer.

Still I am heartened to know I could get a decent one for around $500. I will feel better about such purchases when the money starts coming in.

Kelly Osbourne dyed her 12-week-old bulldog puppy hot pink using human hair dye, and PETA is upset. When PETA gets upset though, people usually roll their eyes. See, here's the thing. When PETA tries to scold an action like this, they say it shouldn't be done partly because the animal is embarrassed and sad. I imagine PETA is all for gourmet dog bakeries, too.

See, the problem is not that the dog is now sad because it's pink. The problem is that dyeing your dog is a stupid thing to do. She did it not because it was a good idea, but because she could. And I think freedom to do stupid things has too much importance over an obligation to be decent.

Sean Connery returns to the role of James Bond, in a video game. Ordinarily you think a classy guy like Connery would not do this, and all this would mean is that they cobbled together previously-spoken fragments for the game's purposes. But no, he's recording new lines, for a Goldfinger video game. What's next, McDonald's ads?

Pentagon is cutting CS research that wasn't just forwarding the military, but all kinds of commercial projects too. Instead the focus will be the military. It's not as simple as this, but apparently short-term defense gain is more important than long-term computer science work, at least coming out of universities. Why, what can this possibly mean for current CS grad students and recent grads?! I guess we'd all better bone up on image recognition algorithms for smart bombs. All we make anymore is war or reality TV.
