Back to Nightlight Press |
I'm redesigning the site, folks, so it's time to start putting things back in the old boxes in the garage and tape it all up. This journal is moving to a new directory and a new system that is working right now: http://www.nightlightpress.com/blog/ Update your links. The design is not finalized, but it's close. Also there is some news about my whereabouts at the San Diego Comic Con in three weeks -- I will be attending, and I will be on two panels this time with some potent cartoonists. I'm excited. As for the rest of the redesign, stay tuned. It is coming as soon as I finish up the non-Flash version. (Some of my friends just went *groan.* YES I USED FLASH.) Man! I can't get enough of Coldplay - X&Y. But that is a given, practically. Everyone will like that who likes whiny British music like me. But the other good one way fewer will know about, and that's Girlyman - Little Star. I must have mentioned them here or at Checkerboard Nightmare, but they are great too. Plus, they can't stand Bush! That's a slam dunk right there! Actually I think neither band can. Hmm. Not my daddy, but GoDaddy. They let you register .co.uk domains too. That just... opens up a whole world of awesome things for me. Like faking a site with a British origin. Things are picking up for me on the web design front, and I'm pleased. I'm going to concentrate on making some headway tomorrow, and once I get my projects to a satisfactory state, I want to look into redoing this site. I know, the design hasn't been up for very long. Probably a lot of elements will stay. But man, I think there's a more intelligent way to handle everything, and by God I'm gonna do it. I have even kicked around the idea of dropping "nightlight press" entirely, but I suppose I should keep it for legacy reasons. Man, the idea of reforming just gives me a kind of queasy thrill. It's been a while since I rapped at ya, but I've been busier than a Japanese beaver in a petrified forest. Things are going well at Blank Label, which occupies 90% of my time, but I have sort of taken a break from it this week to follow up on some design work. This weekend I have to hammer out some more ads. Man, I didn't think that'd be all I had to say! But it is, more or less. I guess I could review Episode III or something like most people already have. "Was it anything other than just okay?" NOOOOOO. Yeah, it's here, it's real. Who's the man? We're the man. Mans, I suppose. Been working on this for weeks. http://www.blanklabelcomics.com/ http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0228-11.htm "It no more occurred to me to flaunt the flag on my chest than it did to pin my mother's picture on my lapel to prove her son's love. Mother knew where I stood." This is a test of the Hopefully It's Working system. All right! It's working. I'm on DreamHost now. Thanks to those who suggested it -- in fact, a number of e-mails came in after I'd already gotten hosting here. If you find anything broken on the site, please e-mail me at kstraub@nightlightpress.com. I think most everything is in place, but there may be some broken images. Also if something goes bad, they have like a three-month money-back guarantee, which I'm grateful for. My Canaca site offers no such thing, and thus I have an account there until October when it runs out. I guess I can host MP3s from there or something until they boot me, the bastards. Did my host change something lately? Start cutting corners somewhere? I've been doing some development for the past couple weeks on archive management, and I'm about finished with this really sweet script that generates calendars and archive links based on customizable templates... but env vars keep changing on me here. There was a recent fiasco with the name of my /home directory changing and breaking all of my scripts. I've been with the same host for six years. I've never had so much trouble with them as I have in the last month. Literally, years would pass without a blip. The bandwidth seems too good to be true for the price, and it pretty much is. A friend got his site shut down for a while, not for going over his bandwidth -- he was far under -- but for a moderate number of users simultaneously hitting his site. If that's the bottleneck, what's the point of all that bandwidth? It's like getting a Super Big Gulp for 15 cents, but you have to sip it through a goddamn buckytube. Plus, this criterion isn't mentioned anywhere, making hosting here more like a minefield than anything else. If you happen to trigger some obscure clause, they can take your site down for a day until you call them to promise you'll never do it again. Sorry guys, I can no longer shill for Canaca. It's ridiculous. I've been here too long -- migrating my blog and the other automation would be a huge headache -- but when I have the chance to, I will be cutting my hosting down to one of the cheaper options. They're still a middle-of-the-road host, but I'm sure there's way, way better all over the place. |
